Workshop 1: Games Jam

Leads – Dr Conor McKeown and Dr Steph Rennick

Preparing for a uni course in games design?

Taking your first steps into indie game development? Interested in pixel art, 3D modelling or just love games?

This summer we’re running the first Stirling game jam:  we’ll introduce you to the basics of game design and get you thinking about the tools and processes you need to engage with in order to make something playable as quickly as possible. Working as part of a team, you and a group of likeminded (soon to be) friends will come up with a brief before using industry standard tools to make the core of a game. You’ll also have access to mentorship from Stirling University staff that specialise in making games in engines like Twine and Unity. Whether you want to make the first level of an FPS with cutting-edge graphics, a heartfelt cosy game with hand-drawn pixel art, or an in-depth narrative adventure to rival Toby Fox, we’ll provide you with the guidance and support to get started.

While this would be especially useful for students hoping to study on game design or game studies courses, this would equally be of benefit for anyone interested in digital art, digital culture or digital media. Where possible, all completed game ideas will be hosted on a Stirling branded website that can used to support portfolios and future applications.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Open to 15-18 year olds (S5-6/Highers/Advanced Highers students), these 3 day workshops will introduce university-level study and practice in our disciplines, and encourage students to think beyond their school work and to explore new ideas. Held in the Pathfoot Building on the beautiful University of Stirling campus, the cost (£85) covers space, tuition and access to any necessary equipment: students should bring their own lunch and snacks, or can buy food and drink at the campus cafes/supermarket. This is not a residential course, though accommodation can be booked separately at the Stirling Court Hotel/student residences if desired. Places are limited and early enrolment is encouraged.

Timings: Wednesday 7 August, 11am-4pm. Thursday 8 August, 10-4pm. Friday 9 August, 11-4pm. Please note there will be an end of course showcase on the Friday, which parents and carers are welcome to attend, and we may offer an optional 4-6pm activity (e.g. a film showing) for some workshops on Thursday.
